Ardennes massif abstract Although it constitutes a main tool to unravel the regional recent tectonics, the chronology of the Pleistocene river incision is still poorly constrained within the uplifted Ardennes massif Western Europe. This age is consistent with some previously published estimates based on paleomagnetic data and MIS correlations. In NW Europe, terrace sequences have been largely correlated to Quaternary climatic variations Antoine, ; Cordier et al. The terrace sequences of the main rivers crossing the massif Rhine, Meuse and Mosel have long been used to infer tectonic uplift Brunnacker and Boenigk, ; Van Den Berg and Van Hoof, ; Westaway, , but the scar- city of reliable chronological data, and especially of absolute ages, remains problematic. Indeed, while uplift rate and amount have been derived from river incision since the abandonment of the Main Terrace level of these rivers Meyer and Stets, ; Van Balen et al. Moreover, age data for the main intra-massif tributaries of the Rhine and the Meuse are very scarce and limited to the last w ka e.

A chronological framework for these terraces is established here by integrating geomorphological, stratigraphical and archaeological information with ages from luminescence dating. Optically stimulated luminescence dating of K-feldspar, involving the correction for anomalous fading of the luminescence signal , indicates that the younger terraces have a probable age range of: We deduce that the related major fluvial changes are likely to have been as follows: These values indicate that the duration and rate of both aggradation and river downcutting episodes were variable.

There is widespread evidence for neotectonic activity in this intraplate region. Neither eustatic nor climatic changes during the Quaternary provide clear trends that might explain the observed pattern of valley incision, thus we conclude that this tectonic activity is the most likely driving mechanism.

Show more authors Abstract The river terraces of the Changjiang River in the Three Gorges Reservoir area are key to the study on the evolution of the water system of the Chuangjiang River and the Xiajiang River. These terraces mainly develop in the western part of the reservoir area, i. Up to 6 levels of terraces are identified. The main pronblem encountered in terrace related studies is the lack of reliable temporal controls on the terrace formation.

The results show that the ESR method is likely unsuitable for dating fluvial sediments in the Three Gorges Reservior area. Although the TL method has intrinsuc flaws, the ages of terrace T1-T4 given by the method are supported by indenpendent dating results. The TL ages of terrace T1-T4 are estimated to be ka, ka, ka and ka respectively. In addition, we infer that terrace T4 is older than ka, terrace T5 older than ka and terrace T6 younger than ka based on the chronostratigraphic and the reported paleomagnetic study.

Consequantly, and approximate time series of terrace accumulation is established.

Bamboo pipes are used to lead water into shallow pits Great Nicobar Island Traditional water harvesting — from Kashmir to Kanyakumari Throughout India, several ingenious ways have been devised to catch and store rainwater for future use. They are known as traditional water harvesting systems. It is the traditional water harvesting systems that have made life possible even in the Thar Desert. The technology and engineering of the traditional water harvesting systems differed, depending on whether they were to provide drinking water or to be used for irrigation.

Those meant for drinking water were generally smaller, sometimes covered and with steps leading down to the water. Irrigation systems on the other hand spread over large open areas and had a complicated network of pipes and channels for collecting and distributing water. Trans Himalayan Region Water from melting snow and ice is the only source of water here. Even the Thar desert gets more rainfall.

The melting snows and glaciers are the only source of water. The people made intelligent use of their limited resources and made agriculture possible in this dry and barren land. The snow and ice melt slowly through the day and water is available in the streams only in the evening, when it is too late for irrigation. The water in the streams was hence led by channels to storage tanks called zing and used the next day.

It was investigated the occurrence of large drainage rearrangements and the cause of the marked altimetric and morphological differentiation between the western and eastern sectors of the drainage basin. Digital elevation model analysis was employed along with an automatic topography classification, field investigations, identification of ancient fluvial deposits and drainage anomalies, optically stimulated luminescence dating and integration with other geological and geochronological data.

The rupture of the ancestral divide and the progressive capture of the drainage previously directed to the north occurred after a generalized uplift in the Middle Miocene, which caused the drainage superimposition and the excavation of depressions.
