Sand dunes are being re-established at a popular South Devon beach where they were covered over by a car park around 40 years ago. The network of sand dunes at South Milton Sands was decimated when the public car park was built in the late s and early s. The National Trust, which bought the land in , has removed a section of the car park as part of a managed retreat from the encroaching sea.

The timber sea defences at South Milton Sands The trust has also removed the deteriorating timber sea defences between the car park and the beach. The move is in keeping with the trust’s Shifting Shores policy of allowing nature – the encroaching sea – to take its course.

The work, which follows consultation with local groups, residents and businesses, was completed in April However, old maps dating back to the late 18th century show sand dunes in the area currently covered by the car park.
The current project, which got under way on 2 February , will see some of those dunes restored.
